The underlying goal of the YMCA of Central VA is to provide services according to the specific needs of the Lynchburg community. One need that the Downtown YMCA feels that needs to be addressed immediately is the number of youth in their community who do not know how to swim. Drowning is the second leading cause of death among youth, 14 and younger. This is especially common in African American children, who drown at a rate almost three times higher than the national average.

The Downtown YMCA is continuing their relationship with Lynchburg City Schools to provide free swim lessons for 2nd graders at three inner city elementary schools. This partnership was due to grants received from the Community Trust, and the Retail Merchants for the Lynchburg Swim Initiative (LSI). The selected children meet twice a week for a 45 minute lesson for 4 weeks. Transportation is provided from the school after dismissal to the YMCA and then home after their lesson. Since beginning in February 2009 107 children have already been taught. Through the YMCA Swim Lesson curriculum, participants not only learn how to swim, but learn how to be safe in an aquatic environment, basic rescue techniques, water sports and games and the building their self confidence.
