Each year hundreds of youth in our community begin school without the essential items needed to help build self esteem, and self confidence. The YMCA Bright Beginnings program links these youth with caring contributors and volunteers who provide these vital items that assist in the foundation for better attendance, academic achievement, and success.

Bright Beginnings purpose is to provide back- to-school items for children in grades K through 5. With your help hundreds of children in our community will have a bright beginning this school year carrying a new backpack filled with new pencils and notebooks. Walking into school the first day without a pencil, and paper, can be detrimental to a child’s self esteem and confidence. The YMCA of Central Virginia is hopeful that a little effort and caring spirit will help children in our community have better attendance records, and build their self worth to provide a vital foundation to academic achievement and success.

Here's how you can help:

  1. Donate. A financial contribution of $50 will provide an excellent start with backpacks filled with school supplies.
  2. Become a Backpack Buddy. Purchase a backpack, fill it with supplies, and drop it off at the YMCA. A list of necessary supplies is available at your local YMCA.
  3. Volunteer. Volunteers are needed for Friday August 14th..
