For nearly a century, the YMCA has led the way as the nation’s largest and most respected provider of activities for youth. What makes YMCA so special? For starters, honesty, respect, responsibility, and caring are the cornerstones of every YMCA program.
In addition, the Y adds a unique component to help children develop positive identities, values, and social skills. That component is known as “Developmental Assets.” These are 40 essential character building blocks that young people need to grow up to be healthy, competent, caring and responsible adults.
The YMCA of Central Virginia offers programs for youth whether they are in school or out of school.
Curriculum
The YMCA School-Age Care Curriculum Framework is used in all of the YMCA of Central Virginia school age programs. This curriculum discusses the developmental stages of children and youth, describes YMCA beliefs and other frames of reference used in selection and developing activities, connects the curriculum to the YMCA mission and goals. The curriculum emphasizes eight YMCA core content areas:
- Arts & Humanities
- Character Development
- Health, Wellness and Fitness
- Homework Support
- Literacy
- Science and Technology
- Service Learning
- Social Competence and Conflict Resolution
In addition to this curriculum framework, the YMCA of Central Virginia utilizes Step by Step Movement Education curriculum, and 40 Developmental Assets as a guideline for all of our school age programming activities.
The YMCA does not turn anyone away for inability to pay. Through our scholarship program, children are able to attend our programs at a reduced rate.

Did you know that more than 30% of children go home after school unsupervised? The YMCA offers Before & After School Programs with a flexible schedule that allows a child to develop in a supervised environment. Partnering with Lynchburg City, Amherst County, and Appomattox County schools, the YMCA is able to offer a structured program that concentrates on character education and allows youth to grow spiritually, mentally and physically. Before & After School Programs are offered at many area schools, and if your child’s school is not a site location, the school system will bus your child to the closest program. Program hours are 6:30am until school begins and after school until 6:00pm. The YMCA does not turn anyone away for inability to pay. Through our scholarship program, children are able to attend our programs at a reduced rate. There is no reason why children should have to go home unsupervised.
