Lifeguard Program
The YMCA Lifeguard course is designed to prepare participants with the knowledge and skills needed to be a lifeguard. This comprehensive course offers up-to-date information on how to guard, anticipate and prevent potential hazards before they occur and how to take action to help those in danger when necessary. This course also includes American Heart Association CPR, First Aid, and AED certifications, as well as ASHI Oxygen Administration. Requirements: Minimum age 16. Participants under the age of 18 must have parental consent. You must be able to pass the following swimming test:

  • Swim 500 yards.
  • Tread water for 2 minutes with legs only
  • Surface dive headfirst and feetfirst in 8 to 10 ft. of water & swim underwater for 15 feet.
  • Pass the prerequisite swimming test
  • Full participation in the course.
  • Successful completion of written test
    (80% on each chapter)
  • Competence in all water skills

Junior Lifeguard Program
Jamerson Family YMCA
This course trains participants in the YMCA Jr. Lifeguard training program. This course presents the knowledge and skills needed to recognize aquatic risks and to assist a lifeguard in the emergency response of an accident or injury. This course is not a certification course and does not provide participants with lifeguard certification. A parent/guardian must attend the first night of class.

Requirements: Minimum age 10-15.

  • Ability to swim 100 yards any stroke.
  • Ability to tread water for two minutes, legs only (scissors, rotary or eggbeater).
  • Surface dive (head first/feet first 4–6 ft, or submerge & touch hand on bottom in five ft. of water).
  • Strength and maturity to assist in backboard procedure.
  • Remain alert, with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Sit for extended periods, including in an elevated chair.
  • Move to various locations, including in and around an elevated chair.
  • Communicate verbally, including projecting the voice across distances.
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.
  • Observe all areas of the aquatic environment.
  • Perform all needed rescues and survival skills.
  • Think in the abstract, solve problems, make decisions, instruct, and evaluate.
